Having grown up as a first generation American in the ‘90s, Evan is always depicted as a scholarly, obedient, hardworking boy from a devout Mormon family. He can make us laugh and cry all at once as he touches issues to do with cultural belonging, family ties, and character development.
Early Life
Direct from Taipei, Michael Evan Huang is a Taiwanese-American, born in Washington D.C, to parents of Taiwanese origin, with three brothers. Depending on where the sixth child was in birth order, he could get a lot of attention from his parents.
Evan was a young boy when the family relocated to Orlando, Florida in 1995 to do business in his father’s restaurant. This proved very educational for him, as he established himself in suburban Florida quite well within a very short time after the move and remained tied to his roots. Evan appeared to have absolved the American environment and retain his family’s traditional upbringing.
During childhood he was a bookish child who took part in educational competitions and other co-curricular activities. Evan especially excelled in balancing his education and as well as the family responsibilities since he was most careful, a perfectionist who hated disorder deeply.
Career
As for the show’s time, Evan is a still a student, but his grade record and activities show great potential of him in the future. Participation in the school events such as government students’ body and other academic competitions demonstrated administrative bent of mind.
He exhibited some characteristics of an entrepreneur, most probably inherited from either parent, and was involved in different small businesses and school projects. Organizing school event or assisting his father in the restaurant business, whose responsibility Evan understood fully and had the dedication towards the task assigned to him.
About Parents: Louis and Jessica Huang
Louis and Jessica Huang, Evan’s parents, provided him with the characters that in one way or another were fully developed by the end of the show. Louis Huang is his father and owns a restaurant in Orlando known as Cattleman’s Ranch Steakhouse; he typifies the American dream because he is an optimist and a business man.
Jessica Huang his highly motivated, overbearing real estate agent wife who puts a great emphasis on academic success and career accomplishment. Evan was the only Huang child who had an examined relationship with his parents throughout the narrative.
While Evan’s older brothers were rebellious most of the times with parent’s skim and aims, Evan was on the parent’s side most of the times. One of his frequent loves interests was Jessica, his girlfriend, with whom he shared his character and worldview in the series.
Both parents played a parenting role in nurturing Evan into a balanced person with abilities to achieve wished academic performance as well as interpersonal skills we have learnt. With this kind of parenting, he is able to grow up embracing both his Taiwanese roots as well as the American chances and become a success both in those cultures making him understand nobody grows up only for themselves.
