Why Vietnam Was the Perfect 2-Week Escape for Our Family

Why Vietnam Was the Perfect 2-Week Escape for Our Family

Travel Leave a comment

When planning a family vacation, we wanted something different – a destination that would entertain our kids, offer cultural depth, and give us a chance to slow down together. Vietnam turned out to be exactly that and more. With stunning landscapes, warm locals, and a family-friendly vibe, it became our ideal 2-week escape.

Why Vietnam Was the Perfect 2-Week Escape for Our Family

Day 1 – 4: The North – Culture & Nature Immersion

Hanoi Half-Day Tour – A Glimpse into Vietnam’s Soul

Our 2 weeks in Vietnam began in Hanoi, Vietnam’s charming capital. We visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature on our first morning. The guides were great at explaining history in a way that even our 9-year-old could follow. It felt like we weren’t just sightseeing, we were learning.

After a walk around the Old Quarter, we stopped for a break at a tucked-away coffee shop and introduced the kids to egg coffee. That evening, we joined a food tour, exploring back alleys and busy sidewalks. The kids were fascinated by the sizzling Banh Xeo and skewers grilled right on the street. Pho quickly became a comfort food.

Ninh Binh – Hidden Gem of Tranquility

A short drive from Hanoi brought us to Ninh Binh, often dubbed ‘Halong Bay on land’. We chose Tam Coc, and the slow boat ride through limestone caves and golden rice paddies was as serene as it was fun; the kids giggled the whole way. We had lunch at a local family-run spot overlooking the karst cliffs, the food was simple and delicious.

Halong Bay Cruise – A Night on the Water

The highlight of the north was definitely our overnight cruise in Halong Bay. We stayed aboard a mid-sized boat with spacious cabins and fantastic service. The kayaking activity and Sung Sot Cave visit added some light adventure.

Dinner on the deck, under a sky full of stars, with fresh seafood and gentle waves lapping at the hull – that memory is staying with me forever. While the pace onboard was slower, it gave us a chance to relax as a family (you can bring a good book or a few small games to enjoy during downtime onboard).

Day 5 – 10: Central Vietnam – Heritage & Hands-On Experiences

Fun in the Forest & Craft Time in Hoi An

Hoi An was like stepping into a postcard. We laughed our way through a basket boat ride in Cam Thanh, where local guides spun us in circles and showed off traditional fishing techniques.

Later, we joined a lantern-making workshop – a quiet, creative activity that everyone loved. Each child walked away beaming, lantern in hand. Topping it all off was time to explore the enchanting streets of Hoi An, where history meets craftsmanship. Tailor-made clothes with impressively fast turnaround make for perfect, personal souvenirs.

Train Ride Adventure to Nha Trang

Next, we took the day train to Nha Trang. The kids were skeptical at first, but once onboard, they settled in with card games and window views. The route hugged the coast at times and gave us a glimpse of rural Vietnam that flying would’ve skipped entirely.

By the time we arrived in Nha Trang, it felt like we’d had a real adventure, not just another transfer.

VinWonders Nha Trang – Family Paradise

VinWonders was a full-on hit with the kids. Between the water park, aquarium, and cable car ride over the ocean, they were in heaven. It’s a full-day affair, so we packed towels, sunscreen, and snacks.

Our youngest declared it “the best day ever,” and honestly, we had fun too. There’s something deeply joyful about just playing together all day.

Free Days in Nha Trang

We built in two free days here and were glad we did. Between beach games, fresh coconuts, and some much-needed spa time, we all got to recharge. Optional activities like mud baths and cycling trips are easy to book last-minute.

The slower pace gave us room to breathe and enjoy the moment, something we often miss in daily life. Ready to plan your family trip? Here’s a great place to plan your family tour.

Day 11 – 14: Southern Vietnam – Urban Buzz & Delta Discovery

Ho Chi Minh City – History & Modernity

Arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, we explored both its energetic buzz and its sobering past. The War Remnants Museum was emotional but important. The kids asked thoughtful questions, and the guides helped us navigate the heavier topics.

Stops at the Central Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral offered architectural beauty and photo ops. And yes, ice cream breaks helped keep little moods in check!

Mekong Delta Adventure – Mud, Boats & Bare Hands!

One of the most unexpectedly fun days was our Mekong Delta trip. We rode coconut boats, tried catching fish with our hands, and shared fresh tropical fruits with locals. The kids laughed nonstop, especially during the muddy fish-catching session.

Tan Phong Island – Slow Living & Farewell

Our final day took us to Tan Phong Island, where we biked through fruit orchards, made rice paper with locals, and shared a meal at a family home. It was a wholesome, gentle ending to a high-energy trip.

Our farewell dinner back in Ho Chi Minh City felt bittersweet. We weren’t ready to leave.

Final Reflection: Why We’d Do It All Again

This trip offered everything we hoped for: a perfect balance of guided tours and downtime, hands-on experiences for the kids, and unforgettable scenery. From building lanterns to kayaking in Halong Bay, there was never a dull moment, but also enough breathing room to enjoy it.

The food was a major highlight – fresh, flavorful, though we still packed some snacks from home just in case. Most accommodations were very comfortable, and our guides went above and beyond, especially in keeping the kids engaged.

Honestly, if you’re even thinking about traveling as a family, Vietnam deserves a top spot.
