Tips for Installing Laminate Benchtops in Your Space

Tips for Installing Laminate Benchtops in Your Space

Home Improvement Leave a comment

Laminate benchtops are a popular choice for homeowners and businesses alike, thanks to their affordability and wide range of finishes. Installing laminate benchtops in your space can maximize the look and function of a kitchen or workspace. To ensure that the installation goes smoothly and results in a long-lasting, attractive surface, this article provides key important tips to keep in mind.

Tips for Installing Laminate Benchtops in Your Space

1. Choose the Right Quality Laminate

The first step in ensuring a durable and long-lasting benchtop is selecting the right laminate. While all laminate surfaces are designed to be tough, some options are more resistant to scratches and moisture. Look for laminate that is designed for high-traffic areas, with a thickness of at least 1.5mm. Higher-quality laminates can better withstand everyday damage, making them ideal for areas like:

  • Kitchens
  • Workspaces

2. Properly Prepare the Surface

Before laying down the new laminate, make sure the surface underneath is dry and clean. If installing over an existing benchtop, ensure the old surface is level. Any imperfections, like cracks, will show through the laminate and could affect the installation’s durability. Sand down rough patches, clean the surface thoroughly, and ensure there are no dust or grease residues that could interfere with adhesion.

3. Measure Twice, Cut Once

Take time to measure the area carefully before cutting the laminate sheets. Use a tape measure and check all dimensions to avoid mistakes. Make sure the laminate sheets are large enough to cover the entire benchtop with some overhang, which can be trimmed later for a professional finish. Cutting laminate requires precision, so using a fine-toothed saw will provide clean edges without causing cracks.

4. Use High-Quality Adhesive

The adhesive you use plays a major role in the overall durability of the benchtop. Always opt for a high-strength contact adhesive specifically designed for laminate installations. Apply the adhesive evenly to both the benchtop surface and the back of the laminate sheet. Pay close attention to the manufacturer’s instructions regarding curing time and application methods.

5. Secure the Laminate Firmly

Once the adhesive is applied, begin at one edge and slowly roll the laminate into place, ensuring it aligns with the edges of the benchtop. Use a roller to press the laminate into place, eliminating air bubbles. Work from the center out to ensure even pressure is applied, and the adhesive bonds securely. It’s vital to press down consistently for a flawless finish, as any loose areas can lead to peeling over time.

6. Trim Excess Laminate

After securing the laminate, you’ll need to trim any excess material hanging over the edges of the benchtop. This can be done with a jigsaw or a laminate trimmer. Be sure to use a fine blade to prevent rough edges or chipping. For smooth and professional-looking results, use a router with a flush trim bit to neatly edge the laminate, ensuring a clean, seamless finish along the edges.

7. Seal the Edges

In order for you to protect these vulnerable areas, apply a high-quality edge strip. Most laminate benchtops come with pre-glued edge strips, which can be easily attached using an iron. The heat activates the adhesive, bonding the strip securely to the edges. For extra protection, you can also apply a waterproof sealant around the edges to prevent water from seeping into the laminate.

Install Laminate Benchtops that Last!

Installing a durable laminate benchtop can transform your space, providing a sleek, cost-effective surface that stands up to daily use. By carefully selecting the right materials, preparing the surface properly, and following these installation tips, you’ll ensure that the benchtop lasts for years to come.

Taking time to measure accurately, choose quality adhesives, and seal the edges will help keep the benchtop looking fresh and functional in high-traffic areas. Whether updating a kitchen or workspace, these simple steps will lead to a successful installation, adding both style and durability to your space.
