She told me later that she had spent months choosing tiles and cabinet handles, but maybe two afternoons thinking about the actual equipment that would go into the kitchen. Sound familiar?

If you are planning a kitchen renovation in Singapore, there is a good chance you are about to make the same mistake. And honestly, nobody warns you about it until it is too late.

Why Singaporeans Keep Getting This Backwards

Here is the thing about kitchen renovations in Singapore. We tend to start with how we want the space to look and then try to squeeze the functional bits in afterwards. Interior designers will show you beautiful 3D renders of your dream kitchen, and you will get excited about colours, textures, and layout. All of that matters, obviously.

But the equipment, the hob, the oven, the range hood, the fridge, the sink, that is what you actually interact with every single day. Those are the things that determine whether cooking in your kitchen feels like a pleasure or a chore. And most homeowners treat them like an afterthought.

I have seen it happen dozens of times. Someone picks a countertop material before deciding what cooktop they want. They lock in their cabinet dimensions before checking whether a built-in oven will actually fit. They choose a range hood based on how it looks rather than whether it can handle the kind of cooking they do.

Then six months after moving in, they are living with compromises that bug them every day. And unlike a bad paint colour, you cannot easily swap out a poorly chosen oven or a hob that does not suit your cooking style.

The Singapore Kitchen Is Unique

This is worth saying because a lot of the kitchen inspiration we consume online comes from Western countries where kitchens are designed very differently. American and European kitchens tend to be larger, with different cooking habits and different ventilation setups.

Singapore kitchens have their own quirks. They are usually compact. Many of us cook with high heat regularly, whether it is stir-frying, deep-frying, or using a wok. We need range hoods that can actually handle heavy oil and smoke. Our climate means refrigeration works harder all year round. And because a lot of HDB and condo kitchens are semi-enclosed or have limited ventilation, choosing the wrong equipment can make the space unbearably hot.

So copying a Pinterest kitchen from a farmhouse in Vermont? It might look lovely, but it probably will not work for how you actually cook.

What to Think About Before You Pick Your Equipment

If you are serious about getting your kitchen right this time, here is what I would suggest thinking about before you lock in anything with your interior designer or contractor.

Start with how you cook, not how you want the kitchen to look. Do you stir-fry every night? You need a powerful hob with high BTU output and a range hood that can handle the smoke. Do you bake a lot? Prioritise oven quality and placement. Do you meal prep in big batches? Fridge and freezer capacity suddenly matter a lot more. Your cooking habits should drive your equipment choices, and your equipment choices should drive the layout. Not the other way around.

Think about materials that last. In Singapore’s humid climate, cheaper materials corrode, stain, and wear out faster than you expect. Stainless steel has become increasingly popular for home kitchens, and for good reason. It is durable, hygienic, resistant to heat and moisture, and it looks clean for years. There is a reason every professional kitchen in the world uses it. More homeowners are starting to catch on.

Do not forget about ventilation. This is probably the most underestimated part of any Singapore kitchen renovation. A weak range hood might look sleek, but if you are doing any kind of serious wok cooking, you need something with real extraction power. Talk to your equipment supplier about this, not just your ID. They will know the technical specs that actually matter.

Measure everything, then measure again. I cannot stress this enough. Built-in ovens, dishwashers, and fridges all have specific cutout dimensions, and these vary between brands and models. Choose your appliances before finalising your cabinetry, or you will end up with gaps, awkward fits, or worse, equipment that simply does not fit at all.

Ask about after-sales support upfront. This is one area where a lot of homeowners get burned. You buy a beautiful induction hob from some online retailer, and then two years later when it needs servicing, the brand has no local support. Always check whether your supplier offers installation, maintenance, and repairs. It makes a bigger difference than you think.

Most homeowners default to one of two routes. Either they buy everything from their ID’s recommended supplier, which often limits their options. Or they browse online marketplaces and pick things based on price and reviews, which is a gamble when it comes to quality and after-sales service.

Your kitchen is the room you use most. It deserves more than two afternoons of thought.
