 Integrating Wellness into Your Bedroom

Modern life can be stressful and overwhelming, so your bedroom should be the ultimate sanctuary where you can reset and recharge. Wellness isn’t just about sleep; it’s just as much about how the environment around you supports your physical and mental health. This blog offers a guide for how to create a bedroom with optimal comfort, light and accessibility.

Prioritising High-Quality Furniture

The furniture you incorporate in your bedroom plays a huge role in your overall well-being. Poor quality furniture can be unsupportive, easily broken and a visual eye-sore, impacting both your physical and mental health.

Investing in well-made bedroom furniture pieces that are durable and long-lasting, offers unparalleled benefits. Purchasing a high-quality bed frame is integral in a bedroom as it ensures that your body remains supported whilst you sleep. A poor-quality bedframe can contribute towards muscle strains and chronic pain, so this is a crucial consideration when investing in your bedroom furniture. If you’re looking to invest in high-quality and durable furniture pieces, sustainable furniture is perfect as it’s designed for longevity and made from ethical premium materials.

Furthermore, in your bedroom the bed shouldn’t be the only space to sit back and relax. Incorporating a sofa or chair in larger bedrooms can create a designated area for activities like reading or meditating. Separating active relaxation from sleep helps to signal to the brain that the day is coming to a close and it is time for the body to wind down.

Lighting for Circadian Rhythms

The correct lighting is crucial for fostering a calming atmosphere in your bedroom. Harsh blue light disrupts melatonin, a hormone that signals sleepiness, triggering the brain into thinking that it is daytime. It is therefore a good idea to incorporate dim warm-toned lighting in your bedroom to create a consistent sleep schedule.

Smart LED lighting is designed to mimic natural light patterns, by imitating the cycle of sunlight throughout the day. In fact, they can adjust their colour temperature and brightness to match the body’s natural circadian rhythm. This has huge benefits on your body’s ability to relax in the evening and prepare the body for sleep.

Furthermore, layered lighting is ideal for fostering functionality and ambience within a bedroom.  Ambient lighting can be helpful for offering overall illumination when getting ready in the morning. Whilst, accent lighting, like table lamps, can create a dimmed glow in your room, ideal when transitioning from day to night. Furthermore, task lighting sources can be used for activities like reading, to avoid harsh overhead lights.

The Bedroom Office

Since Covid-19 the rise of remote and hybrid working has increased, resulting in more individuals working from home. For those with smaller homes it can be difficult to find enough space for a dedicated home office, so instead many individuals have workstations located in their bedroom. However, working from your bedroom can have considerable negative effects on your sleep schedule. Once you start associating your bedroom with work stress and anxiety it can inhibit your ability to relax within the space.

If you have to incorporate a makeshift home office in your bedroom, it’s crucial that you set clear boundaries. For instance, keep your desk positioned as far away from your bed as possible or use room dividers to separate the space. In addition, once the workday is over, clear your workspace by storing your laptop or documents away. This will take your mind off work when you’re trying to relax in your bedroom. If you’re storing away clutter or fragile items over the weekend it can be a good idea to use sturdy cardboard boxes to keep items safe and orderly.

Furthermore, it’s important that you create a supportive and ergonomic work setup, to prevent chronic pain and injuries. Investing in an ergonomic office chair and desk will support good posture, preventing back pain and muscle strains.

Futureproofing for All Stages of Life

To foster wellness in your home you must create a space that works for you, regardless of mobility or age. Integrating accessible medical equipment in your bedroom can ensure your safety and provide independence, which is especially important for those living in their forever home.

Despite what people may think, accessibility aids don’t have to be a visual eyesore that ruins your home’s interior. Many modern daily living aids can be incorporated into the home discreetly or designed to be visually appealing. For instance, stylish grab rails and low-key electrical beds that go unnoticed to the untrained eye.

Bedrooms are very private spaces so it’s highly important that they are designed with independence in mind, especially for individuals who are older or have mobility issues. Normalising accessible equipment can go a long way in ensuring that your bedroom remains stylish whilst supporting your daily needs.

Creating a bedroom built for wellness and relaxation is the intersection of high-quality furniture, thoughtful lighting and inclusive design. Even making one small change to your bedroom this week, like swapping a light bulb or investing in a more supportive chair, can go a long way to improving your daily life.
