6 Best Lawyers You Hope You’ll Never Need

6 Best Lawyers You Hope You’ll Never Need

6 Best Lawyers You Hope You’ll Never NeedIf you don’t have a lawyer saved in your contacts, that’s a good thing. It means that, so far, nothing’s gone terribly wrong. But you know how life is… It has a way of throwing curveballs just when you’re least prepared.

One day, something messy, emotional, and confusing happens and if you have the right lawyer in the corner, it can make all the difference. Nobody is telling you to be dramatic, you just want to be realistic.

Most people never have the need to hire a lawyer, but if that day ever comes, you’ll want someone who actually knows what they’re doing.

Lawyers Who Can Help When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned

Hopefully, you won’t need any of these guys in your life, but just in case, let’s see who can help you when something goes wrong.

1. Estate Planning Lawyer

An estate planning lawyer helps you make decisions that protect your family if something happens to you. This means writing a will, setting up trusts, naming guardians for your kids, and handling power of attorney documents. A lot of people (especially younger parents) put this off because it feels too serious or too far in the future.

But accidents and illnesses don’t wait for you to have all your affairs in order and, contrary to what most people think, estate planning isn’t just for wealthy families with stocks and vacation homes.

If you want to make sure your kids, property, and decisions are handled the way you want, you should take care of this in advance.

2. Family Lawyer

Sometimes, personal relationships get messy and you need legal help. This is when a family lawyer can be a source of relief. They can handle a divorce, work out child custody, manage child support, or help with an adoption. They can also help with something more serious like getting a restraining order in cases of domestic violence.

If you ever find yourself getting through a breakup or having problems with co-parenting, this is the person who will make sure your rights (and your child’s best interests) are protected.

And don’t think you failed if you need a family lawyer – you’re just doing your best to make smart decisions during a hard time.

3. Civil Rights or Institutional Abuse Lawyer

Some of the most painful legal cases involve people, especially children, who are hurt by the very systems that were supposed to protect them. A civil rights or institutional abuse lawyer steps in when there’s abuse, neglect, or mistreatment of any kind inside facilities like schools, foster homes, or juvenile detention centers.

In cases where the child is in a facility that’s out of state (say, they’re in a juvenile detention facility) and an issue occurs, it’s very important to hire a lawyer that operates in that same state. So, if you live in Texas but the child is in Illinois, for instance, you’ll need an Illinois youth detention center sexual abuse lawyer to handle the case properly.

4. Personal Injury Lawyer

This is who you call if someone else’s mistake causes you physical harm. This includes car accidents, slips and falls, or injuries in the workplace. A personal injury lawyer will help you deal with medical bills, lost wages, and insurance companies who often try to get out of paying for as long as they can.

A lot of people don’t know that personal injury lawyers work on contingency a lot, which means you don’t have to pay them unless they win your case.

5. Medical Malpractice Lawyer

When medical care goes wrong (e.g., wrong diagnosis, surgical mistake, errors in medications, etc.), a medical malpractice  lawyer helps you know (and understand) your rights and hold the guilty party accountable. These kinds of situations are usually overwhelming, especially if there’s a child involved.

Nobody wants to believe that a medical professional can make a life-changing mistake, but it happens quite a lot. A malpractice lawyer can help you get answers, and in some cases, even compensation.

6. Special Education Lawyer

If you have a child with a learning difference or disability and they’re not getting the right support at school, you’ll need a special education lawyer. They can help your family fight for services like IEPs, 504 plans, and accommodations in the classroom. Sometimes, schools will simply outright deny these. Other times, they’ll agree to everything on paper but won’t follow through.

A special education lawyer will know how to push back and hold the school accountable. Many parents don’t even realize they have legal options when a school disappoints, but they do.

Conclusion

Not the most cheerful list you ever read, right? No glitter crafts, no brunch recipes…

Unfortunately, being an adult comes with responsibilities and knowing which lawyer you need when is one of them. But, hey, knowing where the water shut-off valve is can’t be your idea of fun either, but you have it covered because you have no other choice.

Hopefully, you’ll never need any of these legal superheroes, but if life decides to surprise you, at least now you’re prepared.
